Impact of the AfCFTA on Women Entrepreneurs

Contexte : The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a transformative opportunity for Cameroon, particularly for its dynamic yet often marginalized women entrepreneurs. This context note explores the potential impacts, both positive and negative, of the AfCFTA on women-owned businesses in Cameroon, considering existing barriers and opportunities for growth.

Cameroonian women entrepreneurs face significant challenges, including limited access to finance, skills training, technology, and market information. The AfCFTA, with its promise of reduced tariffs and simplified trade procedures, could unlock access to larger regional markets, fostering business expansion and increased profitability. However, without targeted interventions, women-owned businesses risk being outcompeted by larger, more established firms from other African nations.

To this end, the Economic Policy Institute of the Henri Kouam Foundation is organizing a webinar to provide participants with practical knowledge and strategies that will enable women effectively leverage the AfCFTA.

Objective: This Webinar seeks to outline how women will be impacted by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

Specifically, it will;

-Illustrate the role of the AfCFTA in boosting sales for women-dominated sectors.
– Present the impact of the agreement on women informal sector workers.
– Provide practical tools and resources to women entrepreneurs who benefit from the AfCFTA.
– Offer recommendations to ensure all women entrepreneurs can identify and leverage business opportunities in the AfCFTA.

The impact of the AfCFTA on SMEs: what strategies are needed to become more competitive?

Context: The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) creates a single market for goods and services in Africa. It will boost intra-African trade by 52.3% by 2025 and generate up to $450 billion in additional revenue by 2035.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 90% of the economic fabric; and the AfCFTA provides valuable export opportunities but challenges such as limited access to financing, inadequate infrastructure, and increased competition can blunt these gains. Faced with this situation, the Cameroon Economic Policy Institute of the Henri Kouam Foundation is organizing a webinar to help SMEs navigate the new business environment created by the ZLECAf and become more competitive.

Objectives: This panel discussion seeks to;

 – Analyzes the potential impact of the AfCFTA on African SMEs, highlighting opportunities and challenges.
– Discuss the determinants of business competitiveness.
– Present the business climate in different countries and their impact on trade.
– Discuss strategies that SMEs can adopt to improve their competitiveness under the AfCFTA.
